Chapter 8 - VICTORIA'S FATHER

Charles Langford requested a meeting the next morning.
Not Damian.
Not Victoria.
Charles.
Lucian chose the location.
A private room at Vale Meridian with attorneys present.
Charles entered looking amused.
âAva Knox.â
She disliked him immediately.
He was silver-haired and calm in the way powerful men are when they expect fear.
âYou look very different from Damianâs description.â
âWhat did he say?â
âThat you were emotional.â
Ava smiled. âMen say that when women remember details.â
Charles sat.
âI understand you found documents that belong to Sterling North.â
âThey were on my computer.â
âPlaced there without your knowledge.â
âSo you admit Damian placed them there?â
Charles paused.
Ava continued.
âCareful. Emotional women remember details.â
His eyes cooled.
He offered a settlement.
Five hundred thousand dollars.
Ava said no.
One million.
No.
Two million.
Lucian did not speak.
Charles finally asked, âWhat do you want?â
âMy name cleared.â
âThat can be arranged.â
âEvery false tax filing corrected.â
âDone.â
âEvery document Damian forged disclosed.â
Charles leaned back.
âThat is unreasonable.â
âThen weâre done.â
He looked at Lucian.
âYou put her up to this?â
Lucian answered, âIâve barely managed to stop her from putting you through the wall.â
Ava glared at him.
Charles smiled for the first time.
Then he said, âYour grandmotherâs bracelet was beautiful.â
Ava went still.
âWhat?â
âThe vintage gold one.â
She had sold it three years earlier to cover Damianâs tuition. âHow do you know about it?â
Charles realized his mistake.
Too late.
Ava leaned forward.
âWho bought it?â
Silence.
âWho bought my bracelet?â
Charles looked toward his attorney.
Damian had claimed a pawn dealer bought it for eighteen hundred dollars.
Naomi began typing.
Within minutes she found the resale record.
The bracelet had been purchased by an intermediary.
Then transferred to Langford Holdings.
Ava stared at Charles.
âWhy?â
He did not answer.
Lucianâs face hardened.
Then the conference-room door opened.
Victoria walked in.
May you like
She looked at the bracelet photograph on the screen.
And whispered, âBecause my father gave it to me.â
