Chapter 18 - MICHAEL KNOX

Charles denied everything.

His lawyers said “Knox” could mean anyone.

Then prosecutors found the calendar.

MICHAEL KNOX - MONDAY 9 A.M.

The appointment was with a federal safety investigator.

Michael had planned to report the stolen server maps.

He died Sunday night.

Charles was charged with crimes tied to the conspiracy and death.

For Ava, one thing mattered: her father had not been reckless. He had been brave.

At the courthouse, reporters surrounded her.

“Ms. Knox, do you blame the Langford family?”

Ava looked toward Victoria.

She stood twenty feet away, pale but steady.

“No.”

“I blame the people who made the choices.”

Victoria’s eyes filled.

Later, she approached.

“Thank you.”

“That wasn’t for you.”

“I know.”

Damian accepted a plea after prosecutors showed him the warehouse video, fraud records and attempted transfer orders.

He asked to see Ava.

She declined.

Then he wrote a letter.

Damian sent a twenty-three-page letter beginning, I know we both made mistakes. Ava threw it away.

Lucian laughed when she told him.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“Say it.”

“I’m proud of you.”

A family friend mailed Ava a box containing her father’s watch, an old tournament photo and a note in his handwriting.

Ava,

Never let anyone convince you that loving them means becoming smaller.

She sat on her apartment floor and cried.

Not because Damian had broken her.

Because her father had understood the lesson before she did.

That evening, Lucian came over.

He did not knock until she texted COME UP.

He found her holding the note and sat beside her without touching her.

Ava looked at him.

“You can.”

He took her hand.

No audience.

No cameras.

No fake ring.

May you like

Just a hand.

For the first time, that was enough.
