Chapter 4 - THE MONEY SHE NEVER HAD

Ava left the gala in jeans, Lucianâs jacket over one arm, ignoring twelve calls from Damian.
At 11:42, she called the number Lucian had given her.
A woman answered.
âVale Meridian investigations.â
Ava almost hung up.
Instead she said, âThis is Ava Knox.â
Forty minutes later, she sat with Lucian and forensic accountant Naomi Chen.
Naomi slid over records for an LLC called Knox Consulting.
âI donât own a company,â Ava said.
âAccording to the state, you do.â
Her name, former address and Social Security number were all there beside Damianâs email.
Naomi continued.
The LLC had received consulting payments from companies connected to Sterling North.
Then it moved into an account controlled by Damian.
âHe used my identity?â
âPotentially.â
âWhy are you investigating Sterling North?â
Lucian leaned back.
âBecause they tried to acquire one of my companies using information they should not have possessed.â
âAnd Damian?â
âWorked on the deal.â
Damian had handled their taxes, passwords and copies of her ID. Ava had called that trust. Now it looked like opportunity.
Naomi turned a page.
âThereâs another issue.â
Avaâs stomach sank.
âWhat?â
âKnox Consulting owes taxes.â
âHow much?â
âEighty-seven thousand dollars.â
âI make fifty-two thousand a year,â Ava whispered.
Lucianâs expression hardened.
âWe will get this corrected.â
âWe?â
He paused.
Ava looked at him.
âYou donât know me.â
âNo.â
âThen stop talking like this is your problem.â
Lucian met her eyes.
âDamian made it my problem when he used your name to help steal from my company.â
Naomiâs phone buzzed.
She read the message.
Then looked at Ava.
âSomeone just accessed the Knox Consulting account.â
âWho?â
Naomi turned the laptop.
The login location was the Astor Grand Hotel.
May you like
Damian was still at the gala.
And he was trying to empty the account before Ava could reach it.
