Chapter 17 - NO MORE FAKE RING

Three months later, Ava took the Harbor Foundation job.
The board interviewed six candidates and chose her; Ava made sure Lucian had not arranged it.
Her first events raised more money, ran under budget and landed her in a trade magazine.
Lucian stayed away unless invited.
At a spring fundraiser, he arrived alone.
No fake engagement.
No performance.
Ava wore blue. âYou look beautiful,â Lucian said.
âThank you.â
They walked onto a balcony.
âCan I ask you something?â he said.
âDepends.â
âDinner.â
âThat isnât a question.â
âWill you have dinner with me?â
âAs what?â
âTwo people.â
âNo contract?â
âNo.â
âNo investigation?â
âNo.â
âNo surprise fiancĂ©e announcement?â
âIâve retired that strategy.â
Ava smiled.
âOne dinner.â
She pointed at him.
âThat face is why people fear you.â
âWhat face?â
âThat one.â
He relaxed.
Then his phone rang.
Naomi.
Lucian answered.
His expression changed.
âWhat?â
Ava waited.
He put the call on speaker.
Naomi said, âWe found the transit contractorâs archived payment ledger.â
Avaâs heart stopped.
There was a payment from a Langford-controlled shell company.
Date: forty-eight hours before Michael Knox died.
Memo: corrective maintenance.
But the amount was wrong.
Far too large.
And beside it was an authorization code linked to Charles Langfordâs private office.
Naomi continued. âThe contractor kept voice messages.â
One had been preserved on old backup media.
Charles Langfordâs voice said:
Make sure Knox does not get to Monday.
Ava closed her eyes.

For twenty years, her fatherâs death had been called an accident.
Now there was finally a sentence that sounded like intent.
