Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO BETRAYED HER

Ava wanted to hate Monica for using her, but tied to a chair she looked like another person Damian had decided he owned.
Ava sent the image to investigators, but Damian had learned how to hide the signal.
Then Monica called.
Video.
Ava answered.
Damianâs face appeared.
âHello, sweetheart.â
âDonât call me that.â
He smiled.
âYou always hated conflict.â
âI hated pointless conflict.â
âBring the laptop.â
âThe police have copies.â
His smile disappeared.
âNot the original encryption key.â
Ava frowned.
âWhat key?â
Damian turned the camera.
Monica cried, âAva, donât come!â
He hit her.
Ava flinched.
âStop.â
âThereâs my girl.â
âWhere?â
Damian gave an address in Red Hook.
An abandoned furniture warehouse.
âCome alone.â
He ended the call.
Ava called Naomi.
Then Lucian.
She almost didnât.
But pride was not strategy.
He answered on the first ring.
âWhat happened?â
She told him.
âIâm coming.â
âNo. You donât get to decide.â
After a pause, he asked, âWhat do you need?â
She answered.
âYour security team coordinates with police. No one moves until I say.â
âYou are not going inside alone.â
âI didnât say I was.â
Years producing events had taught Ava entrances, exits, timing and crowd flow. Buildings were systems; so were people.
She pulled up the warehouse plans.
A service tunnel let police enter unseen while Ava approached visibly as a distraction.
Lucian listened.
âThatâs dangerous.â
âYes.â
âI hate this plan.â
âSo do I.â
âThen we agree.â
For half a second, she almost smiled.
At 2:10 a.m., Ava walked toward the warehouse carrying a laptop bag.
Damian stood beneath one hanging light.
Monica was behind him.
He smiled.
âYou came.â
Ava stopped twenty feet away.
âI always did clean up your messes.â
His smile disappeared.
May you like
Then a gun appeared in his hand.
âYou should have kept doing that.â
