Chapter 13 - THE WAREHOUSE

Ava raised both hands.

“Where’s the money?”

Damian laughed.

“Still thinking like a poor person.”

“You stole twenty-eight million dollars.”

“I moved twenty-eight million dollars.”

“Into what?”

“My future.”

He looked almost beautiful in the cold warehouse light.

Ava held up the bag. “Laptop.”

“Slide it.”

“No.”

His gun shifted toward Monica.

Ava’s heart pounded.

“You hurt her, you lose your leverage.”

“She betrayed me.”

“So did I.”

His eyes went to Ava.

Damian said, “You think Vale loves you?”

“No.”

Ava continued.

“That’s the difference between us. I don’t need a powerful man to prove I matter.”

His face tightened.

“You needed me.”

“I thought I did.”

“I gave you a life.”

“I paid for yours.”

That hit.

Damian stepped forward.

“You were nothing when I met you.”

Ava smiled.

“I had two jobs, savings and friends.”

She tilted her head.

“Then I met you.”

Monica made a sound that was almost a laugh.

Damian whipped around.

Ava moved.

She kicked the laptop bag across the floor.

Damian instinctively followed it with his eyes.

Police breached.

“Drop the weapon!”

Damian grabbed Monica.

A gunshot cracked through the chaos. Security pulled Ava behind a concrete pillar.

Damian ran toward the loading bay.

Police followed.

Monica was free.

Ava crawled toward her.

“Are you hit?”

“No.”

“Can you walk?”

“Yes.”

Then a black SUV smashed through the warehouse’s side gate.

Damian jumped inside.

The driver accelerated.

Police vehicles followed.

Ava stood shaking as Lucian appeared behind the tactical line.

“You okay?”

She nodded.

Then noticed blood on his sleeve.

“You’re hit.”

“Grazed.”

“You said no one moves until I say.”

“I didn’t move.”

“You are bleeding in a warehouse.”

“Technically I stayed behind the line.”

Ava wanted to be furious, but pressed a medic’s cloth against his arm.

He winced.

“Don’t misunderstand this.”

“I wouldn’t dare.”

Then Naomi ran toward them.

“They recovered Damian’s bag.”

“Money?”

“No.”

“What?”

She held up a small encrypted drive.

“It’s the archive.”

Ava looked toward the loading bay.

Damian had escaped.

May you like

But he had left behind the one thing powerful people were most afraid of.

Evidence.
