Chapter 5 - THE NIGHT THE ENGAGEMENT BECAME A DEAL

The account was frozen before Damian could move the money.
At 1:17 a.m., Damian left a voicemail warning that Vale was using her. Ava deleted it.
Lucian called Damianâs confidence remarkable. Ava called it expensive. His sudden smile annoyed her because she noticed it.
When Ava said she was going home by subway, Lucian reminded her Damian knew exactly where she lived. That landed.
Lucian said, âStay at one of my hotels tonight.â
âNo.â
âAva.â
âNo.â
He studied her.
âYou reject help quickly.â
âIâve learned help usually sends an invoice.â
He did not argue.
Instead he said, âThen let me make the invoice clear.â
She waited.
âPretend the engagement is real for thirty days.â
Ava laughed.
âYouâre insane.â
âPossibly.â
âWhat do you get?â
âDamian believes you have access to me. He becomes nervous.â
âThatâs your strategy?â
âNervous people make mistakes.â
âAnd what do I get?â
âLegal representation. Forensic accounting. Protection while the identity-fraud case develops.â
âIâm not selling myself.â
âNo. Appearances only. Nothing personal.â
âAnd if I say no?â
âYou get the legal help anyway.â
âThen why would I say yes?â
Lucianâs expression went flat.
âBecause Damian is not the only person using your name.â
He handed her another document.
Victoria Langfordâs family company had paid Knox Consulting twice.
Ava stared.
âSo Victoria knew?â
âWe donât know.â
âThen why was she mocking me?â
âMaybe because she thought you were harmless.â
Ava looked toward the city lights. Thirty days of fake engagement could force Damian into the open.
âRules,â she said.
Lucian raised an eyebrow.
âI make my own schedule.â
âAgreed.â
âNo touching without warning.â
âAgreed.â
âNo lying to me.â
He paused half a second too long.
Ava noticed.
âNo lying,â she repeated.
Lucian nodded.
âAgreed.â
She held out her hand.
âThirty days.â
May you like
He took it.
And somewhere in Manhattan, Damian Cross was about to learn the woman he discarded had stopped protecting him.
