Chapter 3 - THE FAKE FIANCĂE

Ava stared at Lucian.
âYour what?â
âMy fiancĂ©e.â
âYou have the wrong woman.â
âNo,â he said. âI donât.â
Damian stepped forward.
âVale, whatever game this isââ
Lucian looked at him.
Damian stopped talking.
Victoria called it absurd. Lucian replied, âYouâre welcome to call me a liar publicly.â Nobody volunteered.
Ava whispered, âPrivate. Now.â
He guided her toward a side corridor.
Once the doors closed, Ava stepped away. âWhat are you doing?â
âStopping a situation.â
âBy inventing an engagement?â
âIt worked.â
She stared.
âWhy me?â
Lucianâs expression changed.
âIâve been trying to speak with you for three weeks.â
Ava went still.
âWhat?â
âYou never answered my office.â
âIâve never received anything from your office.â
He studied her.
âInteresting.â
âWhy would you contact me?â
âBecause of Damian.â
Her stomach tightened.
âIâm not with Damian.â
âI know.â
âThen what?â
Lucian reached into his jacket and handed her a business card.
On the back was a handwritten number.
âCall this tonight.â
âNo.â
âAva.â
The use of her first name felt too familiar.
He lowered his voice.
âDamian Cross submitted financial records to Sterling North six months ago as part of a promotion review.â
âSo?â
âSome of those records include transfers from an account in your name.â
Ava stopped breathing. âHow large?â
âThree hundred and twelve thousand dollars.â
She laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because she had never possessed three hundred thousand dollars in her life.
Lucian watched her.
âYou didnât know.â
âNo.â
âThatâs what I needed to confirm.â
The ballroom door opened.
Damian stood there.
His face was pale.
âAva,â he said. âDonât listen to him.â
Lucian looked at Damian.

And Ava realized the fear she had seen earlier had nothing to do with romance.
Damian was afraid she might learn where the money came from.
