Chapter 20 - HER PLACE

Two years later, Ava still owned the black dress Damian ruined.
She kept it in the back of her closet, not as a wound but as evidence.
Her credit and taxes were repaired. Charles was convicted, Damian served time, Victoria rebuilt quietly and Monica remade Bellmere.
Ava launched her own event firm, KNOX HOUSE.
By its third year, KNOX HOUSE was profitable and held the Harbor Foundation contract.
Lucian invested nothing.
Avaâs rule.
He did introduce her to an accountant.
His loophole.
Their relationship did not begin with rescue.
It began after the rescue story ended.
Dinner, arguments, bad movies, apologies and boundaries built trust slowly enough to be real.
When Lucian eventually proposed, he did it in Avaâs kitchen while she was eating leftover noodles.
He held out a ring.
Ava stared.
âYou realize the last time you called me your fiancĂ©e, we had never met.â
âIâve improved the process.â
âBarely.â
âIs that a yes?â
She made him wait ten full seconds.
Then smiled.
âYes.â
At their wedding, Ava made sure every server, florist and coordinator ate before the guests.
Late that night, Ava stood near the terrace in a simple white dress.
Her grandmotherâs bracelet circled her wrist; her fatherâs note rested in her purse.
Lucian came beside her.
âHappy?â
âYes.â
âSure?â
She looked at him.
âI donât say things I donât mean anymore.â
âTerrifying.â
âYouâll survive.â
Ava looked through the glass at the crowded room.
Years earlier, Damian had told her she did not know her place. Back then, she didnât.
She thought her place was beside the man she loved.
Behind him when he needed support.
Below him when his ambitions grew.
Her place was wherever she stood without abandoning herself.
The champagne had dried and the laughter ended.

And the billionaire who once called her his fiancée to save her from a room full of strangers?
He no longer needed to save her.
