Chapter 15 - THE LAST FLOOR

Damian had chosen the eighty-second floor.
Only concrete, steel and Manhattan wind.
Police wanted Victoria to ignore him, but Ava argued he would run again if they waited.
Lucian did not argue with her.
That mattered.
Victoria would go in wired while Ava waited one floor below and police controlled the exits.
Nobody expected Damian to have two private security contractors loyal to Charles Langford.
They appeared from a maintenance elevator.
Victoria screamed.
Ava ran upstairs.
One contractor grabbed her; Ava drove an elbow backward and twisted free.
She reached the unfinished floor.
Damian stood near the edge.
Victoria beside him.
âAva.â
âYou asked for me.â
âI asked for the woman I knew.â
âSheâs gone.â
His eyes hardened.
âI know.â
He held up a phone.
On screen was a transfer order.
Twenty-eight million dollars.
âHelp me unlock the Knox account.â
âI canât.â
âYou can.â
âItâs frozen.â
âVale can unfreeze it.â
Ava almost laughed.
âSo this is still about someone else fixing your life.â
Damianâs face twisted.
âYou owe me.â
âI owe you?â
âI gave up four years.â
Ava stepped forward.
âI paid your tuition.â
âYou wanted to.â
âI sold my grandmotherâs bracelet.â
âYou chose to.â
âI skipped meals.â
âYou never complained.â
There it was: if she had given willingly, he believed he deserved everything.
Ava looked at Victoria.
âMove toward me.â
Damian grabbed Victoriaâs arm.
Lucianâs voice came through Avaâs hidden earpiece.
âPolice are thirty seconds out.â
Damian noticed Ava listening.
He lunged for the earpiece.
Ava stepped back.
His shoe slid on construction dust.
For one terrible second, his body tipped toward open air.
Ava caught his wrist.
Damian stared up at her.
âPull me up!â
Avaâs shoulder burned.
Victoria grabbed Avaâs waist.
Together they held him.
Damian screamed.
âDonât let go!â
Ava looked into the face of the man who had used her for years.
Then she said, âIâm not you.â
Police reached them.
May you like
They pulled Damian to safety.
And put him in handcuffs.
