Chapter 6 - DAMIAN COMES TO BROOKLYN

Damian pounded on Avaâs door the next afternoon.
She opened it with the chain still attached.
âWhat?â
âSo this is real?â
âWhat?â
âYou and Vale.â
âI came to protect you.â
âFrom the man investigating the company you used my name to bill?â
Damian went still.
There it was.
Ava watched the lie arrive in his eyes.
âI donât know what youâre talking about.â
âKnox Consulting.â
Color drained from his face.
âThat was tax planning.â
âFor money I never received?â
âI was building our future.â
âOur future ended at 3:17 a.m.â
Damian rubbed his jaw.
âThis is more complicated than Vale is telling you.â
âThen explain it.â
He looked toward the apartment. âYou kept the old laptop?â
The question came too fast.
âWhatâs on it?â
âNothing.â
âWhatâs on it, Damian?â
His face hardened.
âYou always were dramatic when you got scared.â
âNo. I got scared when I trusted you.â
He shoved the door, tightening the chain. Security moved and Damian stepped back.
Ava said, âLeave.â
He pointed at her.
âYou think Vale cares about you? Men like him collect useful people.â
âMaybe.â
She looked at him.
âBut you collected useful women.â
His expression twisted.
âI loved you.â
âThen you have a strange definition of theft.â
Damian walked away.
One of Lucianâs security men waited until he was downstairs.
Then he said, âMs. Knox, was he asking about a laptop?â
Ava nodded.
She closed the door.
In the bedroom closet was an old silver computer she had not opened since Damian moved out.
She charged the dead laptop. One folder appeared on the desktop: STERLING.
Ava had never seen it before.
She opened it.
Inside were hundreds of files.
At the top was a spreadsheet titled:
LANGFORD - OFF-BOOK PAYMENTS.

And in the notes column beside Damianâs name was a sentence that made Avaâs skin go cold.
IF AVA FINDS THIS, SHE BECOMES A LIABILITY.
