Chapter 1 - THE HAND IN MIDAIR

The slap never landed.
Emma Carter caught Victoria Langfordâs wrist inches from an elderly womanâs face.
For one stunned second, the Chicago ballroom went silent. Millionaires, politicians, celebrities, and powerful donors turned toward the twenty-four-year-old waitress.
Victoriaâs eyes went cold.
âTake your hand off me.â
Emma needed this job. Her fatherâs hospital bills covered half the kitchen table, and her sisterâs tuition was due in eleven days. One complaint could cost every catering shift she had.
Then she looked at the woman in the wheelchair.
Silver hair. Thin hands. Fear in her eyes.
âI wonât let you hit her.â
A gasp moved across the room.
Victoria leaned closer.
âYouâre a waitress. Do you understand what happens when people like you forget their place?â
Emma swallowed.
âIf protecting her costs me my job, then I guess it costs me my job.â
Victoriaâs face changed.
âYouâll regret this.â
Security started forward.
Then a manâs voice cut through the room.
âRelease Miss Carter.â
Emma froze.
So did Victoria.
A tall man stepped from beside the marble columns.
Vincent Moretti.
Billionaire hotel owner and real-estate king, Vincent Moretti was a man Chicago businessmen discussed carefully.
Security stopped instantly.
Victoria forced a smile.
âMr. Moretti, this waitress assaulted me.â
Vincent walked past her.
He went straight to the woman in the wheelchair.
Then he lowered himself onto one knee.
âMother.â
Emma felt the blood leave her face.
The woman Emma had defended was Isabella Moretti. Vincent checked her cheek, then rose toward Victoria with a cold expression.
Then he looked at Emma.
âWhat is your name?â
âEmma Carter.â
For several seconds, Vincent said nothing.
Isabella suddenly reached for Emmaâs hand.
Her fingers closed around Emmaâs wrist.
âCarter?â she whispered.
Emma nodded.
Isabellaâs eyes filled with tears.
âThomas Carterâs daughter?â
Emmaâs breath stopped.
Her father had never told her he knew the Morettis.
Vincent stared at Emma.
Then at his mother.
And Victoriaâs face went pale for an entirely different reason.
May you like
Because Isabella whispered:
âYour father saved my life.â
