Chapter 2 - THE BILL ON THE KITCHEN TABLE

Six hours earlier, Emma had been dividing her paycheck between gas, groceries, Lilyâs tuition, and her fatherâs care.
Thomas Carter had been in and out of Northwestern Memorial for five months after a warehouse fall damaged his spine and triggered complications from an old heart condition.
âGo to work,â he told Emma from his hospital bed.
âYou say that like Iâm choosing between work and a cruise.â
âYou should be doing something better than carrying trays for rich people.â
âRich people tip.â
âRich people also think twenty dollars makes them generous.â
That nightâs Moretti Foundation gala paid double. Emma took it.
Near nine oâclock, she noticed the elderly woman in the wheelchair.
Alone.
The woman could not reach her water, so Emma handed it to her.
âThank you, sweetheart.â
âOf course.â
The woman smiled.
âYou remind me of someone.â
Emma laughed lightly. âHopefully somebody nice.â
Before the woman could answer, Victoria arrived.
Victoria Langford wore silver silk and enough diamonds to pay Emmaâs family debt twice.
âWhat are you doing here?â Victoria asked the older woman.
âI was invited.â
âYou were supposed to remain in the private lounge.â
The older womanâs smile disappeared.
âYou embarrassed me at dinner last week,â Victoria hissed.
âI told the truth.â
âYou made Vincent question the merger.â
âHe should.â
Victoriaâs face hardened.
âYouâre confused.â
âNo.â
âYouâre old.â
Emma turned back.
The old woman said, âAnd you are cruel.â
Victoria raised her hand.
That was when Emma moved.
Now, minutes later, Vincent Moretti stood beside his mother while the entire ballroom watched.
Emmaâs manager rushed over, horrified. Vincent corrected her quietly: âMy mother owns the foundation.â
Then Isabella looked at Emma and said, âBring Thomas to me.â
Emmaâs stomach dropped.
âHeâs in the hospital.â
Isabella closed her eyes.
As if she already knew.
May you like
And Vincent asked softly:
âWhat happened to him?â
