Chapter 4 - THE OLD FIRE

The next morning, Emma went to the Moretti offices because someone had found her fatherâs hospital room before sunrise.
Vincent and Isabella met her in a riverfront conference room.
âThomasâs eyes,â she said.
âMy father says the Langfords have been looking for him.â
Vincentâs expression changed.
âWhat exactly did he say?â
Emma told them.
The cut bolts.
The flowers.
Victoriaâs name.
Isabella gripped the head of her cane.
Vincent looked at his mother.
âYou knew?â
âNot about the warehouse.â
âAbout Thomas.â
Isabella nodded.
Twenty-three years earlier, Thomas worked maintenance at the Lakeshore Moretti. During a charity dinner, a fire trapped Isabella in a service corridor after security missed her. Thomas went back.
âHe carried me through the kitchen,â Isabella said. âBurned both hands doing it.â
âWhy did he leave?â
Isabellaâs eyes darkened.
âBecause the fire was not electrical.â
Vincent sat forward.
âWhat?â
She looked at him.
âYour father knew.â
According to Isabella, investigators privately found evidence that a fuel line had been tampered with.
The gala that night involved a real-estate vote.
Langford Development stood to lose millions if Carlo won.
Emma whispered, âVictoriaâs family.â
Isabella nodded.
âThomas saw a man leaving the service corridor before the fire.â
âWho?â
âHe never identified him publicly.â
âWhy?â
âBecause someone threatened his pregnant wife.â
Emmaâs mother had been pregnant with Emma then.
Her skin prickled.
Vincent asked, âWhy was none of this in the report?â
Isabella looked ashamed.
âCarlo buried it.â
Vincent stood.
âMy father covered an attempt on your life?â
âHe believed exposing it would start a war.â
Emmaâs phone rang.
Hospital.
She answered.

A nurse spoke quickly.
Thomas Carter had disappeared from his room.
