Chapter 14 - ST. AGNES

St. Agnes had a memorial wall in the basement.

Rachel Carter’s compartment held her ashes.

And behind the urn, taped to the stone, was a tiny digital recorder.

Thomas stared at it. “She never told me.”

Audio technicians recovered most of the damaged recording.

Anthony Bellini’s voice spoke first.

“I disabled the alarm. Raymond handled the fuel.”

Thomas asked, “Why?”

“Because Langford wanted the contracts buried.”

“People could have died.”

“That was the idea.”

The recording continued.

Anthony admitted Carlo Moretti later paid him to leave Chicago rather than testify.

Vincent’s face hardened.

“My father paid him?”

Thomas nodded.

“Carlo wanted the truth buried after the fire.”

Vincent looked sick.

Emma saw something shift in him.

Anthony said Raymond had a second objective.

“If Thomas survives, watch his family.”

“Why?”

“Because Langford thinks he copied the offshore books.”

Thomas stopped the recording.

Emma stared.

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Then why did Raymond keep coming?”

Thomas whispered, “Because he never believed me.”

Vincent asked, “What offshore books?”

Isabella knew.

Langford Development had hidden political bribes through Caribbean accounts in the 1990s.

Carlo discovered part of it.

If Thomas had copied those records, they could still destroy people.

Emma asked if all of this came from records Thomas never had. Thomas answered, “Rachel found the books.”

Emma stared at him.

“What?”

Rachel had later worked for a Langford subcontractor, recognized names from Thomas’s notes, and copied financial records.

“She told me she destroyed them.”

Emma looked at the recorder from St. Agnes.

Then Lily called.

Her voice shook.

“Emma?”

“What happened?”

“There’s someone inside the apartment.”

May you like

A crash sounded behind her.

The line went dead.
