Chapter 9 - THE BADGE

The badge belonged to Marco. âThatâs impossible,â he said.
âI was with you.â
âBadges can be copied,â Emma said.
âYes.â
âBy who?â
âAnyone with access to our security system.â
Vincent looked at him.
âWho has administrator privileges?â
Marcoâs answer was immediate.
âMy deputy.â
Nico Bellini.
Marcoâs younger cousin.
Anthony Belliniâs son.
Nico disappeared before security reached him.
His apartment was empty, its laptop stripped.
Thomas was moved under guard, and Lily was escorted home. Emma hated how her sister watched every passing car.
âI didnât ask for this,â Lily said.
âNeither did Dad.â
âI have an exam tomorrow.â
Emma stared at her.
âYouâre worried about an exam?â
âIâm trying to have one normal problem.â
Later, Vincent came to the apartment.
Vincent came without a suit and brought groceries.
Emma looked inside the bags.
âYou bought six kinds of pasta.â
âI was told people eat pasta.â
âDo billionaires not?â
âApparently not correctly.â
Thomas watched Vincent carefully.
After Lily went to bed, Thomas said, âYour father was not a good man.â
Vincent nodded.
âI know.â
âHe tried sometimes.â
âI know that too.â
Thomas looked at Emma.
âTrying is not the same as doing.â
Then Thomas handed him a small key.
âCarlo gave me this after the fire.â
Vincent frowned.
âTo what?â
âI never knew.â
The key bore a number.
117.
Marco called from downstairs.
They had found Nico.
Dead inside his car near the lake.
Police suspected an overdose.
Marco did not.
Neither did Emma.
Then detectives found something in Nicoâs pocket.
A receipt from the same hospital where Thomas had been treated.
Time stamp: the morning Thomas vanished.
