Chapter 11 - EMMA GETS FIRED

The next morning, Emmaâs catering manager fired her under pressure from powerful clients. Neither woman needed to say Victoriaâs name.
Emma had $612, Thomasâs rehabilitation claim was partly denied, and Lilyâs tuition deadline was nine days away.
Emma cried over a spreadsheet because courage did not stop bills from arriving.
Vincent found her there later.
âI heard.â
âOf course you did.â
âI can fix the job.â
âNo.â
âEmma.â
âNo.â
She stood.
âYou keep offering power like it doesnât change the room.â
âIâm offering help.â
âFrom you, those are the same thing.â
âI need work. Not charity.â
Vincent nodded.
âWhat kind?â
She frowned.
âWhat?â
âEvent staff? Hotel operations? Foundation?â
âYouâre still trying to hire me.â
âNo. Iâm asking what youâre good at.â
Emma almost said carrying plates.
Then stopped.
She had trained staff, fixed schedules, handled clients, and kept events moving when managers panicked.
âOperations.â
Vincent said, âMy motherâs foundation needs an assistant operations coordinator.â
Emma laughed.
âThat sounds invented.â
âIt existed yesterday.â
âInterview me.â
He raised an eyebrow.
âWhat?â
âIf itâs real, interview me. With other candidates.â
A slow smile appeared.
âFine.â
She interviewed before a three-person panel without Vincent and got the job. Her salary doubled.
That same afternoon, Victoria held a press conference.
She accused Emma of physically attacking her at the gala.
Then implied Emma had targeted Isabella to gain access to Vincent.
A reporter shouted:
âAre you saying Emma Carter staged the entire confrontation?â
Victoria looked into the cameras.
âIâm saying desperate people do desperate things.â

By sunset, Emmaâs face was everywhere.
And someone had leaked her fatherâs hospital debt online.
