Chapter 19 - VICTORIA'S LAST MOVE

Her lawyers blamed Raymond, Mercer, Nico, and anyone else they could.
Then prosecutors played the proxy video.
Victoria threatening Isabella.
Victoria discussing the merger.
Victoria saying:
âOnce she signs, Vincent can object all he wants. The voting block becomes ours.â
Emma testified for forty-two minutes.
Victoria stared at her the entire time.
The defense attorney asked:
âMiss Carter, is it true your life improved financially after this incident?â
âYes.â
âYou obtained a better job?â
âYes.â
âYour father received assets worth millions?â
âYes.â
âYou developed a personal relationship with Vincent Moretti?â
âYes.â
The lawyer smiled.
âSo this has been very profitable for you.â
Emma smiled too.
âMy father was almost killed. My sister hid behind a dryer while a man searched our home. I lost my job and had our debts posted online.â
She leaned toward the microphone.
âIf that sounds profitable to you, we use different math.â
Victoria was convicted on conspiracy, fraud, coercion, and charges connected to the attacks on Thomas.
After sentencing, Victoria requested five minutes with Emma. Emma went.
Victoria sat behind glass.
âYou took everything.â
Emma shook her head.
âNo.â
âMy name. My future.â
âYou made choices.â
Victoria laughed bitterly.
âYou sound like Vincent.â
âNo. I sound like someone who spent years believing rich people had different rules.â
Victoria looked at her.
âThey do.â
âSometimes.â
Emma leaned closer.
âBut gravity still works. Evidence still works. Eventually.â
Victoriaâs eyes filled with anger.
âYou think youâre one of them now?â
Emma smiled.
âNo.â
She stood.
Victoria called after her.
âEmma.â
Emma turned.
Victoria whispered, âI was going to hit her.â
âI know.â

Emma left before it could become an apology.
Some apologies arrived too late to need an audience.
