Chapter 5 - MISSING

Emma reached the hospital in eleven minutes.

Thomas’s bed was empty.

His clothes were gone.

His IV had been removed badly enough to leave blood on the sheet.

Security footage showed him walking out through a service elevator at 8:14 a.m.

Alone.

No wheelchair.

No coat.

Emma stared at the screen.

“He can barely walk fifty feet.”

Security footage showed Thomas take a call, pull out his IV, and leave.

Emma called him.

Straight to voicemail.

She called again.

Nothing.

Vincent arrived with security chief Marco Bellini. “I want to know why someone tried to kill your father,” he said.

At noon, Thomas’s phone pinged near the old Marshall Crown warehouse.

Police were called.

Emma went anyway.

The warehouse had been closed since Thomas’s accident.

Near the loading platform, Emma found his hospital bracelet.

Then Marco found blood.

A small amount.

Fresh.

Marco called from behind a stack of pallets.

“Mr. Moretti.”

There was a hidden maintenance cabinet in the wall.

Inside sat an old metal toolbox.

Thomas’s name was scratched across the lid.

Emma opened it.

Inside were work gloves, a photograph of Thomas with Carlo Moretti, and a black notebook.

The notebook listed dates, license plates, deliveries, and company names.

One appeared repeatedly.

LANGFORD.

The last entry was dated five months earlier.

SAW RAYMOND L. AT MARSHALL CROWN. HE RECOGNIZED ME.

Emma looked at Vincent.

“Raymond who?”

Vincent answered immediately.

“Raymond Langford.”

Victoria’s uncle.

Head of Langford security for twenty-five years.

Emma turned the page.

One final sentence had been written in shaky ink.

IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME, ASK ISABELLA ABOUT ROOM 614.

Metal scraped concrete at the far end of the warehouse.

May you like

Emma looked up.

Someone was inside with them.
