Chapter 16 - THE WRONG POLICE

They bypassed local police and contacted federal investigators because Chief Alan Mercer appeared beside six recent offshore payments.
The local investigation was compromised.
Federal agents took over as Mercer and Raymond disappeared.
Victoria went on television and called the documents fabricated.
Then she made a mistake.
She described the records as âstolen banking ledgers.â
Nobody had publicly identified the evidence as banking records. Victoria had just revealed she knew.
Federal agents served warrants on Langford properties.
Victoria arrived at the Moretti building before agents reached her.
âYou.â
Emma stood.
âMe.â
Victoria looked at Vincent.
âYouâre throwing away a merger worth billions because a waitress grabbed my wrist.â
Vincentâs voice was flat.
âNo. Iâm refusing a merger because your family attempted murder, bribed officials, and tried to steal my motherâs voting rights.â
Victoria pointed at Emma.
âShe has poisoned you.â
Emma laughed.
âThat would require you not already being toxic.â
Victoria crossed the room.
Marco stepped between them.
Emma said, âNo. Let her talk.â
Victoriaâs eyes burned.
âYou think you won?â
âThis isnât a contest.â
âIt became one the second you touched me.â
âThat is your problem.â
Emma stepped closer.
âYou think every room has a hierarchy. You thought Isabella was weak because she was old. You thought I was weak because I served dinner.â
Victoriaâs mouth tightened.
Emma continued.
âYou keep confusing service with obedience.â
Then she reached into her purse.
Marco moved.
Federal agents entered. Victoria froze.
Her purse held a passport, cash, and a flash drive. She had come prepared to flee.
Agents arrested her.
As they cuffed her, she looked at Emma.
âYou have no idea what Vincent Moretti is.â
Emma looked at Vincent.
âNo.â
Then back at Victoria.
âBut I know exactly what you are.â
The elevator doors closed behind the agents.
Marcoâs phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
âThey found Raymond.â
Emma exhaled.
âAlive?â
Marco looked at Vincent.
âNo.â
May you like
Raymond Langford had been found dead.
And the evidence suggested someone inside the Moretti organization had reached him first.
