Chapter 17 - VINCENT'S CHOICE

Federal agents questioned Vincent, Marco, and Isabella.
A shell casing at the scene matched ammunition registered to a Moretti security company.
Victoriaâs attorneys seized on it immediately.
They claimed Vincent had orchestrated everything.
Emma asked him directly.
âDid you?â
âNo.â
She watched his face.
âWould you tell me if you had?â
He did not answer quickly enough.
Emma walked away. Truth was supposed to cost something.
Marco discovered the ammunition had been checked out two years earlier by retired security captain Frank Doria.
Frank had worked for Carlo.
He confessed within a day.
âI did what Carlo should have done.â
âYou murdered a man.â
âHe tried to kill Isabella.â
âSo you decided you were a court?â
Frankâs face crumpled.
âI protected the family.â
Vincent answered quietly.
âNo. You protected the sickness in it.â
Vincent could have buried it.
Instead he turned over internal security records and waived company objections.
The evidence cleared him.
It also exposed older Moretti crimes.
Board members panicked, contracts disappeared, stock dropped, and executives resigned. Vincent still refused to hide the records.
Emma found him alone in Room 614.
Carloâs old office.
âYou could have hidden it.â
âYes.â
âWhy didnât you?â
He looked at the desk.
âMy father confused protecting a family with protecting its worst decisions.â
Emma leaned against the wall.
âThat sounds expensive.â
A faint smile.
âVery.â
Then he looked at her.
âI owe you an apology.â
âFor what?â
âThe first night.â
Emma frowned.
âYou didnât do anything.â
âI told security to release you.â
âSo?â
âI assumed I had authority over the situation because I owned the room.â
âYou kind of did.â
âThat doesnât mean I should have.â
Emma smiled slightly.
âYouâre getting strange.â
âI blame you.â
âDangerous.â
âDinner?â
Emma stared.
âIs that a date?â
âYes.â
âNo security at the table.â
âAgreed.â
âNo private dining room.â
He looked pained.
âPublic restaurant?â
âVery.â
âThat seems reckless.â
May you like
She laughed.
For the first time since the gala, the future felt like something other than an emergency.
