Chapter 3 - THOMAS CARTER

Emma refused to explain in the ballroom. Vincent seemed to understand.
âYou are leaving.â
Victoria stared at him.
âYou cannot be serious.â
âMy mother was in a wheelchair.â
âShe provoked me.â
Vincentâs face went still.
âThat sentence should embarrass you more than anything I could say.â
She leaned toward Emma.
âThis is not over.â
Vincent heard that too.
âIt is for tonight.â
Victoria left.
Vincentâs chief of staff handed Emma a card and asked her to meet him the next day.
âYouâre late.â
âGala disaster.â
âDid anyone die?â
âNo.â
âThen not a disaster.â
Emma sat.
âDo you know Isabella Moretti?â
Thomasâs face changed.
Not much.
Enough.
âWhy?â
âShe knows you.â
Silence.
âDad.â
He looked toward the dark window.
âThat was a long time ago.â
âShe said you saved her life.â
Thomas closed his eyes.
âWhat happened?â Emma asked.
âNothing you need involved in.â
âThat answer has never worked on me.â
âNo. I just stopped a woman named Victoria Langford from hitting Isabella Moretti, and somehow everybody knew my name except me.â
Thomas opened his eyes.
Fear had replaced irritation.
âVictoria Langford?â
âYes.â
He gripped the blanket.
âYou need to stay away from that family.â
âThe Morettis?â
âThe Langfords.â
Emma stared.
âWhy?â
Thomasâs monitor beeped faster.
He whispered, âBecause that warehouse accident wasnât an accident.â
Emma stopped breathing.
Now he said, âSomeone cut the bolts.â
Emma felt cold.
âWho?â
Before Thomas could answer, his room door opened.
A nurse stood there holding a bouquet.
âThese were just delivered.â
White lilies.
No card.
Thomas stared at them.
Then whispered one name.
âVictoria.â
Emma looked at him.
âHow would she know Iâm here?â
May you like
Thomasâs voice barely came out.
âBecause sheâs been looking for me.â
