Chapter 10 - THE SECOND LEDGER

Thomas swore there was no second ledger. Vincent called the note bait.
âFor what?â Emma asked.
âTo make Raymond keep hunting.â
Marco examined the key marked 117.
âCould be a locker.â
Thomas remembered Carlo often met attorneys at Union Station.
They went with police.
Locker 117 opened.
Inside was a brown envelope and an old bank book.
No ledger.
The envelope contained stock certificates.
Marshall Crown Logistics.
Emma stared.
âThatâs Dadâs warehouse company.â
Vincent checked the dates.
Carlo had quietly purchased shares twenty-two years earlier.
Then transferred them into a trust.
Beneficiary:
THOMAS CARTER.
Thomas looked stunned.
âI never knew.â
The trust had grown to several million dollars.
Thomas sat on a bench.
âHe tried to pay me.â
Isabella shook her head.
âMaybe he tried to protect you.â
âBy hiding money?â
Vincent read the attached letter.
Thomas,
You refused cash because you believed silence should not be purchased. You were right. This is not payment. This is ownership in the company whose corruption nearly killed you. If I fail to expose the truth, perhaps one day you can.
Carlo.
Emma looked at the stock certificates.
Marshall Crown.
The warehouse where Thomas had been pushed.
The company where Raymond reappeared.
The trust made Thomas a hidden shareholder.
Enough shares to request old corporate records.
Vincent understood first.
âCarlo didnât leave you money.â
âHe left me access,â Thomas said.
The second ledger was not in a box.
It was in Marshall Crownâs archives.
Attorneys demanded the records using Thomasâs shareholder rights.
Payments flowed from Marshall Crown to Langford security firms.
One recurring consulting recipient appeared.
V.L. ADVISORY.
Victoria Langford.
Emma stared at the amounts.
Millions.

And beside one payment, three months before Thomasâs fall, was a memo:
CARTER MATTER - FINAL RESOLUTION.
