Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN IN THE WHEELCHAIR SPEAKS

Emma wanted to hide.
Isabella refused to let her.
The next morning, Isabella called her own press conference despite Vincentâs objections.
Isabella began simply.
âVictoria Langford attempted to strike me.â
âI was frightened. Emma Carter intervened before she knew my name.â
âShe did not seek my son. She did not ask for money. She did not know who I was.â
Then Isabella went further.
âTwenty-three years ago, Emmaâs father also protected me when people with money chose silence.â
Vincent looked at her sharply.
This had not been planned.
Isabella told them about the hotel fire.
By afternoon, reporters were asking about Raymond Langford, lawyers were issuing denials, and Marshall Crown stock was falling.
âYou didnât have to do that.â
âYes, I did.â
âYou exposed yourself.â
âI spent half my life protected by other peopleâs silence.â
Isabella looked at Emma.
âIt is not protection if it leaves someone else carrying the danger.â
Emma sat beside her.
âWhy did Victoria hate you?â
Isabella smiled sadly.
âShe wanted Vincent to merge Moretti hotels with Langford Development.â
âBusiness?â
âMarriage.â
Emma blinked.
âVictoria and Vincent?â
âVictoria wanted it.â
âDid Vincent?â
Then her expression changed.
âShe believed I was the only obstacle.â
Emma remembered Victoria raising her hand.
The merger.
The threats.
âWhat was she trying to force you to sign?â
Isabella opened a drawer.
A proxy authorization.
If signed, it would have transferred her voting rights in the Moretti Foundation and several family trusts to Vincentâs corporate office.
Emma frowned.
âThat gives Vincent control.â
âNo.â
Isabella pointed to a clause buried on page nine.
In the event of merger, voting authority transferred to the spouse or designated merger partner.
Victoria.
Emmaâs skin went cold.
The slap had not been random cruelty.
Victoria had been pressuring Isabella for control.

Then Emma noticed the signature witness line.
NICO BELLINI.
