Chapter 15 - LILY

Emma reached the apartment with police and security. The door was open, drawers emptied, pictures smashed.
âLily!â
Emma ran toward the bedroom, but Vincent stopped her until officers cleared the hall.
Officers cleared the hallway.
Then someone shouted.
âFound her!â
Lily was hiding behind a laundry-room dryer with a neighbor, shaken but unhurt.
Police found a glove in the apartment.
DNA later matched Raymond Langford.
He had come himself.
Which meant he was desperate.
Nothing valuable appeared missing.
Until Thomas arrived with Marco.
He looked at Rachelâs old recipe box.
âWhereâs the blue card?â
Emma frowned.
âWhat blue card?â
Rachelâs blue index card for blueberry pie was gone.
Thomas sat down.
âShe used codes.â
Emma stared.
âMy mother hid offshore banking information in a recipe?â
âNot the information. A password.â
Emma remembered one strange instruction from the recipe.
TURN 7-19-4 BEFORE OPENING.
Emma had assumed it meant oven settings from an older recipe.
Thomas closed his eyes.
âCarloâs deposit box.â
It matched Carloâs private bank deposit box, number 7194.
Inside the box sat a thick envelope.
Rachelâs handwriting:
FOR EMMA AND LILY, WHEN SECRETS BECOME MORE DANGEROUS THAN TRUTH.
Emma opened it.
Offshore account records.
Payments to politicians.
Judges.
Inspectors.
Police officials.
One current recipient appeared repeatedly.
VICTORIA LANGFORD.
And another name made Vincent go completely still.
CHIEF ALAN MERCER.
May you like
Chicago police.
The same official coordinating the investigation into Raymond Langford.
